    What to expect

Hiking in the rich Andalusian culture and history with the natural beauty of picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and iconic landmarks.

Your main luggage is taken between the villages along the route. This leaves you free to hike with a light bag with the essentials you need during the day. Hiking with a light backpack is much more pleasant than dragging a heavy rucksack, allowing you to enjoy the landscape without a heavy load. The trekking takes you through the picturesque Alpujarra region on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest mountain range. It seems like a journey back in time, as the area has its unique culture from ancient times to the present day, shown in its food culture, architecture, and traditions. The main feature of the outstanding landscape is the villages situated mainly above 1.000 m. They are made up of white, square-shaped houses with flat roofs spreading out across the valleys. The adventure sets out from the village of Laroles located near the pass of La Ragua, the only connection between the north and south of the Sierra Nevada, and heading toward the west.

During the journey, you will discover the many villages and their terraced fields climbing the slopes presenting beautiful views and dramatic landscapes of the mountain range. The blossoms of spring and the colors of autumn are the ideal time to join the trekking making it a unique experience.

Join us and uncover the hidden beauty of the Alpujarra region a treasure to discover!

      Day 2

      Trail 1 Laroles – Válor

After breakfast, we drive over the mountain pass “Puerto La Ragua” to the trekking starting point in the Laroles village. The trail starts at the upper part of the village, at 1000 meters above sea level, from where you can see the flat roofs of the town's houses. One of the defining elements of the territory that reaches its maximum significance in the Alpujarra region is the architecture with values from other cultures and civilizations. The orography and relief of the terrain influence the profile of the towns. These villages are distributed and oriented towards the south so that the sun offers them its luminosity and keeps them warm for as long as possible in the cold winters. Most of these towns are located in the middle of the slopes that descend from the top of the Sierra Nevada in a stepped composition that gives them a charm.

The second hike will take us to Yegen, a peaceful village where the romantic traveler Gerald Brenan lived known as the author of “Al Sur de Granada”, one of the best-known books about the Alpujarra. Today's stage will be more demanding. It will take us from the southernmost point of the Alpujarra trail (800 meters) to the highest trekking point, about 1.500 meters above sea level, in the village of Trevélez. Besides being the highest village in the Sierra Nevada, Trevélez is renowned for its naturally cured hams, benefiting from the healthy air of Sierra Nevada. In the 19th century, the ham of Trevélez gained recognition when Queen Isabel II granted it the distinction of being a supplier to the Royal House. It currently holds the Denomination of Origin and has attained worldwide recognition.

      Day 5

Trail 4 Trevélez – La Taha

Today, the trail takes you through a forest of holm oaks which in autumn offers a colorful and impressive valley. In spring the gorse and broom come into bloom, producing a sea of bright yellow flowers. The panoramic views we pass expose the rugged landscapes with deep valleys and large slopes of the Alpujarra region. Isolated places like ravines are home to many species of fauna and flora due to microclimates characterized by freezing temperatures in winter and mild temperatures in summer. After crossing two ravines and a long descent the path arrives at the village of Busquístar near our destination for today called “La Taha”, a municipality that consists of several beautiful small towns. The name derives from the administrative divisions of the ancient Kingdom of Granada during the Nasrid era. It is a peaceful place with stunning views, preserving well-maintained traditional neighborhoods in the Alpujarra.

The Poqueira Gorge and the three villages on its slopes have become one of the most iconic sights of the Alpujarra Mountains. It is located at the foot of the highest peaks and contains one of the most surprising landscapes of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park making it a must-see for anyone who wants to get to know the Alpujarra. Here we stay for the last two nights of the trekking.

      Free day Capileira

Explore the Historic-Artistic site of Poqueira River Valley and the three villages; Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira.

Although its origins date back to the Phoenicians, Romans, and Visigoths, the strongest legacy is left by the Arabs. The traditional architecture with typical white houses and flat roofs built along steep and winding streets, irrigation systems, agriculture, and linguistic roots are the inheritance left by a culture that was present for eight hundred years.

For the enthusiasts, there is the option to join the guide for an extra hike in the area.

The guide will organize a place to have dinner together to celebrate the last evening of the journey.

      Day 8

The journey ends after breakfast at our hotel. There will be a private transfer from the hotel to the airport in Málaga or Granada.
